Gorakh which is also known as “The Muree of Sindh” is a hill station situated in the province of Sindh. Accurately, it is located at about a distance of 423 km from Karachi which takes about 8 hours through driving.
The hill station positions at the highest plateaus of Sindh, which is spread over a zone of 2500 acres of land and so pulls in nature lovers and tourists to enjoy its mesmerizing climate and the landscape.
The Gorakh elevation enjoys special climate throughout the year with below zero temperatures in winters and even underneath 20 °C in summers as well, whereby receives sufficient amount of rainfall annually. Not to mention, it is the only region in Sindh that occasionally receives snowfall in winters too. Thus, being it an enormous blessing for the people of Sindh.
On the other hand, the road leading to Gorakh is not well maintained and people might undergo some inconvenience inorder to reach their destination but the place is worth the hardships faced. Indubitably, the scenic beauty is beyond description. The sunrise and sunset is the most charismatic prospect of the station, whereas at night time the cluster of stars in the galaxy are visible through naked eyes which makes it an excellent picturesque location that enamors the sightseers. All in all, this place is a must visit which consist of a pleasant climate, hence its scenic beauty speaks for itself.
Different opinions have been given about the history and origin of this hill station. It is said that the medieval Hindu saint, Gorakhnath, had extensively wandered throughout the region. According to Nandu, an authority on Sanskrit, Gorakh is a Sanskrit word which means “shepherding of sheep, cow and goat, etc.” Locally it is stated that Gorakh is derived from Balochi word “Gurkh” but the Balochi word “Gurkh” is perversion of Persian word “Gurg” which means wolf.
Gorakh’s elevation gives it a special climate, with sub-zero temperatures during winter and generally below 20 °C in summer, with about 120 mm of average annual rainfall.
