The history of Rumi topi mostly worin in the northern region of Pakistan is quite interesting. It surfaced as a fashionable emblem during the reign of Nizam VII that later was seen wearing by noblemen and elite class. It was during 1920s when the Khilafat Movement started that this hat made its presence in India. Historian Ziauddin Ahmed Shakeb says that during those days it was worn by every individual who believed in Khilafat Movement.
The cap was also a part of the dress code at Osmania University. In other parts of India, Rumi topi was largely worn by Muslims as it was worn as a mark of prestige and culture.
Many historical personalities including Allama Iqbal and Liaqat Ali Khan wore rumi topi at all times.
Taken as a sign of respect and honour, people in northern tribal areas, still adorn the rumi topi in public and occasions.
The unique shape of the romi topi with its significant height that gives an elaborate feel to the person is a sign of echelon of society. Still a part of many traditions in Pakistan, Rumi Topi is making a comeback as most designers are using it in their fashion statements.
