Kalongi known as Nigella Seeds is widely grown in Pakistan, India and Middle East. It is an annual spicy herb native to Mediterranean region having great medicinal importance in unani, ayurverdic and allopathic system of medicine.
The crop is grown in the province of Punjab in Pakistan during the month of November as a Rabi crop with row to row distance of 30 cms.
It is used as a seasoning in the same way that salt and pepper are used in the West. The spice has a pungent, bitter, peppery flavor and oregano-like aroma. It is used widely in preparation of many Pakistani and Middle Eastern cuisine.
