Alamgir, a Pakistani singer, born in East Pakistan is a popular name in the music industry.
Having arrived in Karachi at a young age of 15, he started his musical career in 1970’s from Pakistan Television Corporation, after an interesting meeting with Sohail Rana. He also dabbled in evening runs at a local café ‘Globe Hotel’ on main Tariq Road, Karachi at a stipend of rupees 350 per month plus free dinner.
Alamgir enjoyed the intellectual gatherings and soon his potential talent was spotted. No sooner, Alamgir was picked up by an audience who liked his style of singing and playing the guitar.
That led Alamgir to Ferozan – a youth programme on PTV hosted by Kusshbakht Aliya. It just so happened that renowned Pakistani music composer Sohail Rana present at the occasion was immensely impressed by the vocals of Alamgir and asked him to perform as a guitarist for his children’s programme (hum hi hum). This is how Alamgir entered in the formal world of music.
1970’s were the time when Urdu Pop music was an unexplored dimension of the Pakistani musical industry. The playback singing, classic ghazals and Qawwalis marked the time. His singing inspired by Ahmed Rushdi and Elvis Parsley, gave him a distinction as one of the finest Pop singers of his times, and for a longer time to come in the Pakistani music Industry. His fine vocals, and melodious songs were the reasons for his prominence, which turned him a legendary singer for the next generations of singers to come.
His lively and powerful performances, attracted huge audiences to his concerts and programs. His famous songs include, Amay Bhashaili Re, Dekha Na Tha Kabhi Humne Ye Sama ,Dekh Tera Kia Rang Kar Dia Hai, Gori Panghat Pe Tero, Heart Beat (1992), Hum Sab Ka Pakistan, Keh Dena, Khayal Rakhna, Maaon Ki Dua Puri Hui, Shaam Se Pehlay Aana.
For his services in the musical industry, he has been honored with various awards and recognitions. He was awarded with Pride of Pakistan Award by the President of Pakistan in 2013 and was blessed with Nigar Award for his playback singing in the movie,‘Aina’ in 1971.
He not only gained popularity throughout Pakistan, but he is equally famous among millions of Pakistanis living around the world. In 2014, he came back from US to Pakistan, after his long break in music, and sang, “Keh Dayna”, which was also was a big hit in the industry.
